Summer is officially here, and we are excited about the launch of the FeminaSci book club! For our first book, we are reading The Sea Around Us by marine biologist and environmentalist Rachel Carson. The Sea Around Us was first published in 1951, and in addition to being on the New York Times Best Seller List for almost two years, Carson also won the 1952 National Book Award her work. The Sea Around Us is a beautifully written account, blending science and poetry, of the ocean and marine ecology. A definite must read for environmentalists and feminists alike. For some general background on Rachel Carson, Femmes of STEM produced a great podcast on her life and legacy.
Alright, are you hooked? Here are some important book club details. Book club will take place on various social media platforms including Twitter and Slack. We will also be hosting a few live Google Hangouts throughout the summer.
Make sure to find us on Twitter @FeminaSci and follow the hashtags #FemSciBookClub and #SummerSciLit. We'll be tweeting reminders for discussions and hangouts and about other book related info, activities, and our summer Twitter contest***.
Next, join the FeminaSci Book Club team on Slack. This Slack team is open to the public; all are welcome. (If you are unfamiliar with Slack, check it out!) This is where the actual book club discussions will take place. Here, you can submit and comment on book discussion topics/questions as we progress through the book. Share your thoughts and reading experiences all summer long!
Prefer a more traditional book club? There will be three (potentially more) Google Hangouts throughout the summer. Exact dates and times TBA. We'll discuss book related topics and questions live.
For each summer month (i.e. June, July, and August) we will focus on each of the three sections in The Sea Around Us. If you can keep up with the reading, great! If not, you are still welcome to contribute. We want you here! But it's the summer, and we all have priorities. We understand. For each of the weeks listed below, we'll focus on that particular book section and will post a few thought provoking questions on Slack. We will also host the live Google Hangout at some point during that week.
June 26-30 Part 1: Mother Sea
July 24-28 Part 2: Restless Sea
August 21-25 Part 3: Man and the Sea About Him
We hope you will join us! From all of us at FeminaSci, we hope you have an amazing summer packed with plenty of sunshine, friends, nature adventures, and happy reading.
